The Night I Became a Father: A Memory That Still Makes Me Smile
Marko

There are moments in life that remain crystal clear no matter how much time passes. For me, one such moment was driving home from the hospital at 1:00 AM on April 30, 2022, just hours after my son was born.
The streets were empty, but my heart was full. I couldn't drive straight home - I had to share this joy with someone. My mother's lights were still on when I pulled up to her house. I remember my hands shaking slightly as I pulled out my phone to show her the pictures of her grandson.
The way her face lit up in that moment is forever etched in my memory. Her smile, genuine and warm, spread across her face as she swiped through each photo. She wasn't just proud of becoming a grandmother; she was proud of my wife too, expressing such genuine admiration for her strength during the natural delivery. In that late-night moment, sharing this joy with my mother, everything felt perfect.
When I finally made it to my own bed, exhaustion hit me like a wave. The adrenaline that had kept me going through the labor and delivery finally wore off, and I collapsed into a deep sleep, my dreams full of tiny fingers and first cries.
The next morning brought new excitement as I prepared to return to the hospital. My mother was so eager to meet her grandson that she wanted to come along, despite knowing about the strict COVID-19 visitor restrictions. I can still see the hope in her eyes as we arrived at the hospital, and the disappointment when security wouldn't let her in. Those were hard times - when rules and safety protocols kept families apart even in their most precious moments.
But my mother, showing the patience and understanding that would make her such a wonderful grandmother, waited outside the hospital while I went up to see my wife and son. Looking back now, I realize how difficult that must have been for her - being so close yet unable to meet her first grandchild.
That day was filled with such a mix of emotions - the pure joy of new fatherhood, the warmth of sharing that joy with my mother, and the bittersweet reality of pandemic restrictions keeping us slightly apart. But somehow, even the challenging parts of that day have become precious memories.
Now, almost two years later, watching my mother with my son, I often think back to that night when I first showed her his pictures. The love that lit up her face then has only grown stronger with each passing day. Sometimes the most beautiful stories start in the middle of the night, with a proud new dad, a beaming grandmother-to-be, and a smartphone full of baby pictures.
